Morning Moments
The first battle I face every day is with the alarm button and trying to convince my fingers to turn it off. It’s not laziness, but the weight of fatigue that feels heavier some days than others. My body doesn’t always cooperate, so mornings are about patience and pacing. I start with stretches to ease the stiffness and a strong cup of coffee to coax myself into motion. Some days, I win this battle easily; on others, it's a harder-fought victory. Then, once I get behind my desk, I’m in a completely different world. A world that I love. Being a VA gives me so much enjoyment, helping others, whether it’s solving a problem or churning through paperwork or answering calls. This is when I’m in my element, my world where I don’t concentrate on me, but my clients’ needs.
Thriving Through the Workday
As a virtual assistant, my day is all about multitasking - managing schedules, answering emails, and keeping my clients’ worlds spinning smoothly. Whilst doing this I am also planning my next marketing strategy, posting on LinkedIn, educating myself in areas that will benefit my business, making sure I’m working within the law, speaking to potential clients and networking. It’s non-stop, but I love it. Technology is my ally here; tools like scheduling apps and voice-to-text software make my tasks more manageable. But not every day runs like clockwork.
You never know what’s around the next corner. What will your next task bring? Will it be a pleasure or a pain? To be honest, I’m not bothered either way. I love a challenge. I love to be a “Fixer” who can think about the day I’ve just experienced and see what I’ve achieved, and I love to absorb information, learn new things train myself so I know how to deal with it again in the future. I learn from my experiences.
I also like to make a difference. What I mean by that, is make a difference (In a good way) to other peoples’ lives. I want to help them and make things easier. Whether it be doing their administration tasks, organising them and their work, even being that sounding board to bounce ideas off or just have a rant at, I will put my hand to anything that is asked of me.
I suppose you would call it being versatile. I know a VA who is referred to as “The Swiss Army Knife”. I’m not sure I’d like that nickname, but call me whatever you like, whatever you see fit!
The Emotional Rollercoaster
Living with multiple sclerosis means balancing the physical and emotional demands of both work and health. There’s pride in doing my job well, but there are also moments of self-doubt and frustration. I remind myself that progress isn’t always linear, and that’s okay. The support from my clients, lifts me on the tough days. I have so many fabulous people that I work with and have met through networking that it keeps me going and allows me to focus on the good things.
Finding Peace in the Evening… Yeah Right!!
When the workday ends, it’s about recharging my batteries. I’ve learned to listen to my body -it tells me when it needs rest. In most households, it’s this time of the day that you may settle down on the sofa with your partner, watch something on the TV, read a book or have a cheeky glass of wine. Something along those lines. In all honesty, I dread this time of day. 5:30pm hits and it’s game over. Fatigue kicks in. Sometimes just lifting my foot up off the floor is difficult, let along actually walking. I have to sit in my armchair on my own as I drive my husband mad with my constant fidgeting. I can’t sit down for long as the sensations in my leg won’t let me settle and the only way I can relieve it is by walking around, which doesn’t help when you are fatigued. I finally sit down, and the muscle relaxants medication kicks in (I have to take quite a heavy dose) and I’m often falling asleep in my chair by 8:30pm. Needless to say, I can never snuggle up on the sofa with my husband, read that book or watch anything properly on TV. Forget about trying to watch a film! It’s the guilt I feel that is the hardest thing to handle. Seeing my husband desperate to talk after his long, hard shift at work or be able to sit together and enjoy a film. I know he misses the old days. However, no matter how the day has unfolded, I try to find one thing to be thankful for before I call it a night.
Final Thoughts
Living with Multiple Sclerosis while juggling the demands of work isn’t a polished picture-perfect experience. It’s real, raw, and a very emotional journey at times. My story isn’t unique, but it’s one voice in a larger conversation about resilience and adaptability in the world around us.
As for my work, nothing changes. I am Claire McDonald, Virtual Assistant, Administration and Business Support. Ready for anything!
